DUBFEST - a car show for Volkswagen fans!

When: Sunday March 23rd 2025

Time: 9am to 2pm

Where: Ringwood VIC
Manhattan Hotel, Heatherdale Road &, Canterbury Rd

Cost:  $15 (fully donated to the Bayswater CFA)

One of the most exciting new shows in the Australian VW scene, Dubfest is an annual gathering of VWs of all ages and types. Combining air-cooled classics like Beetles, Kombis, Type 3s, and Karmann Ghias, alongside contemporary water-cooled models like Golf GTis and Golf Rs, Passats, Boras, Siroccos, Corrados, and Jettas, Dubfest aims to showcase the rich variety of the VW brand.

2025 marks the third year of Dubfest, which is presented by Melburgluft and Volksclub Bendigo. Dubfest is run as a not-for-profit community-oriented show, and proceeds are donated to the Bayswater CFA. Dubfest grew out of the VW Jamboree, which was a long-running Volkswagen-only event in Caribbean Gardens, Scoresbury before the location was retired and VW Jamboree shuttered.

Dubfest has been born to unite all sides of Volkswagen community with the aim of growing into the largest Volkswagen enthusiast event in Victoria. Between 300 and 350 Volkswagens are expected in 2025, at the Manhattan Hotel in Ringwood. There is a $15 entry fee, which is fully donated to the Bayswater CFA, and gates open from 9am.

The Volkswagen Beetle

A symbol of counter-culture freedom today, the Volkswagen Beetle’s origins are actually found in 1930s Germany. Produced for 65 years, from 1938 to 2003, with more than 21.5 million examples built, the rear-engined, air-cooled icon of 20th-century transport was originally called the Type 1.

It was born from a desire for German residents to have access to an inexpensive, robust, and simple “people’s car.” While legendary engineer Ferdinand Porsche is often credited as its designer, it shares overwhelming similarities with a 1925 design from Béla Barényi, as well as taking heavy inspiration from a mid-1930s Czech Tatra 97.

The name Volkswagen translates to “people’s car,” and the Beetle, which didn’t get that name until 1968, really found its feet after World War II when its simple, dependable platform, cheap purchase price and running costs, and rugged reliability made it wildly popular the world over. Powered by a small, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine, what started with just 1131cc eventually grew as large as 1584cc, while disc brakes, power steering, impact-absorbing bumpers, winding glass windows, 12-volt electrics, and other advances made their way onto the Beetle.

During the 1960s, they became an icon of the counter-culture hippy movement, and their familiar styling (which was left largely unchanged for the entire 65-year production) meant Beetles were a common sight on the roads, no matter where on the planet you were. Their simple bones also meant they were easily upgraded, and Beetles were being raced competitively as far back as the 1950s, including at the famed Bathurst touring car race.

The Volkswagen Beetle transcends car culture to often be regarded as one of the most important vehicles of all time.

the Kombi van

Since its introduction in 1950, Volkswagen’s Kombi has been one of the world’s most popular vans, minibuses, and pick-up trucks. VW initially called the light commercial cab-over the “Type 2,” as well as the more famous “Kombi,” “Transporter,” and “Microbus,” depending on which specs the vehicle was ordered with. They were also one of the first post-war light commercial vehicles of their type.

Sporting forward controls and a cab-over format from 1950 to 1990, Type 2 VWs were even built on the same chassis as early Beetles until 1979, and also shared the Beetle’s boxer four-cylinder engine. The second-generation Kombi entered production in 1967, while the third-generation model followed in 1979, before being replaced by new Transporter/Caravelle models in 1990, which moved to a front-engine, front-driven layout. Part of the massive appeal of VW Kombis was their versatility. Kombis could be ordered with sliding or swinging doors, in four-door or five-door formats, with up to 23 windows in some passenger models, in single-cab or crew-cab configurations, and with long- or short-bed tray sizes. Their popularity as a hardy, reliable workhorse made them highly attractive for the aftermarket to turn into camper vans, ambulances, fire engines, refrigerated vans, and more.

Their simple nature, ability to haul bulk people, and cheap purchase price made Kombis the van of choice during the counter-culture era of the 1960s, as well as for surfers. Today, they’re an icon of 20th-century transport and pop culture and are among the most high-prized post-war classic commercial vehicles.
