What is MotorEx?

Australia’s premier indoor car show, Meguiar’s MotorEX, is more than a mere collection of shiny machinery; these vehicles blur the line between automobiles and art. This year over 800 epic rides of wildly varied styles will pack the Melbourne Showground, so it is a given Enthusiast Motor Insurance will be there to talk coverage and check out the best show and street cars on display.

See you at MotorEx in 2025

With its lurid flames, raked stance and chopped roof, Leigh Schnerring’s 1934 Ford 3-window coupe screams “hot rod”.

The fat-fendered, raked-and-flamed look was first made famous in the 1974 movie The California Kid starring Martin Sheen, while the wide-white tyres on Halibrand-style wheels hark back to hot rodding’s earliest days on dry lake beds.

At MotorEX you can see late model cars parked beside traditional hot rods, race cars and street machines, meaning there is something for every type of car enthusiast.

Originally held in Sydney, in 2014 MotorEX moved to Melbourne as it is considered the home of Australia’s automotive industry. This lends the show a professional vibrance as it represents an opportunity for people in the automotive industry across Australia to catch-up.

For spectators the diverse range of attractions has made MotorEX a must-visit show, even if you only have a passing interest in custom cars. In addition to checking out the top show cars in Australia, this year US car-building legends the Ring Brothers will be doing meet ‘n’ greets, while there are hopping demonstrations by lowriders, plus burnout and drift demos, unveils of new builds, freestyle motocross performances, and even dyno sessions where you can see cars showcase how much power they make at the wheels!

Cars on display at MotorEX 2024 will be as diverse as the Ferrari V12-powered Holden Torana of the Castlemaine Rod Shop, up to the epic “Forged” XY Falcon that is claimed to be the best, highest-quality show car ever built in Australia. There will also be a large contingent of true street machines on display with the Real Street display allowing car enthusiasts to cruise their beloved car in and put it on display.

The MotorEX stands as one of the key ways Aussies can celebrate car culture, so we’ll hopefully see you there.

First held in 2002, previous winners at MotorEX include legendary cars like:

Peter Fitzpatrick’s “Trilogy” FC Holden street machine

Mick Fabar’s advanced ZERO’D diesel Ford Falcon

Darrell Leemhuis’ ground-scraping Holden Rodeo ute

Mark Tarabay’s “Sublime” rotary-powered Nissan 200SX
